Shushan-George L. Gilchrest, 89, of Shushan, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 3, 2017 at his residence.
George was born in Shushan on December 22, 1927 and was the son of the late Clifford and Edith (Jackson) Gilchrest. George was a 1947 graduate of Salem Washington Academy where he played football, basketball & track. He continued his education at Hudson Valley Technical Institute in Troy earning a degree in carpentry.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict.
He was a self-employed building contractor building homes and barns for 37 years until he retired in 1993.
George attended the Newman United Methodist Church in Shushan; he was a member of the Francis J. Clark, CMH American Legion Post 812 in Salem; a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and a 65 years member of the Shushan Vol. Fire Dept. George looked forward to the yearly reunions of the 72nd Engineers and family gatherings on holidays. His retirement years were spent living life in the slow lane in his beloved hometown of Shushan.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Helen (John) Doane, Kenneth (Wilma) Gilchrist, Edna (Fenwick) Steele, Charles "Pook" (Betty) Gilchrist, Florence "Slats" Gilchrest, William (Mary Lou) Gilchrest, Gerald Gilchrest, Harold Gilchrest who was killed in Italy during World War II and Richard “Dick” (Colleen) Gilchrest.
George is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Hayes Gilchrest whom he married August 17, 1957; his children, Edith (Glenn) Slaymaker of Argyle and Jeanne (Dan) Smith of Shushan; his three grandchildren, Taylor Cuevas, Nolan (Erika) Cuevas and Cordell Smith, thirteen nieces and nephews and their families as well as one cousin, Dorothy Lee of Auburn, NY.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge with Carol Finke and Rev. Ray Waters officiating.
A celebration of Georges’ life will be at The Georgi, 21 Adams Lane, Shushan for light refreshments and to share memories.
